MONSOONS

In India, rain is the harbinger of great news for the farmers. It is the celebration of life, it is rejoicing with the monsoons. With the coming of rain comes the monsoon festival Teej, dedicated to Goddess Parvati. Nature wears a new look. It is celebrated in several states across India more so in the northern and the central parts. It is the celebration of the bounty of nature, the arrival of clouds and rain.

Beautifully decorated swings (jhula) are seen hanging from trees decked in flowers. Elsewhere in states like Assam with the coming of monsoons, the farmers rush with their plough to the fields. Monsoons are the part and parcel of the very life of Indians more so those residing in the villages.

THE JOY OF READING

  W hen I was a child, once in a year we had buses packed with books of all kinds-short stories, general knowledge, riddles, autobiography, and a lot more-every type of book a bookworm would dream of. There was always a constraint. Papa could somehow manage our admission fees and our traveling fare. When one bus would reach our school I would ask for money from my mother. She never said 'No' yet I dared not ask for more money. In little ways, she had inspired me into doing great things. Whatever little money I had during my afternoon break,  I would run on hearing the school bell ring and surf amidst the books. Among the books, I brought one was the autobiography of the former President of India, a visionary and a great leader Dr.A P J Abdul Kalam. Once or twice I brought bookmarks as well. KONARK SUN TEMPLE

"India's Best Kept Secret" Odisha is the land of fables and myths. This beautiful eastern coastal state of India has one of the oldest sun temples in India. Konark Sun Temple built in the 13th century is dedicated to Sun God Surya. The presiding deity is the Sun God Surya. The main door of the temple is closed. The place is very well maintained by the Archeological Survey of India. Considered to be UNESCO World Heritage Site this 13th-century temple is located in Konark, Odisha. The word Konark is a combination of two Sanskrit words (Kona-corner or angle) and arka (the sun). The temple structure depicts the Kalinga or Orissa style of temple architecture which is regarded to be a subset of the nagara style of  Hindu temple architecture.
